Moving Within Korea: The Complete Relocation Checklist

Moving to a new home inside Korea is a different job from arriving in the country: you already own things, hold contracts, and have an old address to unwind. The good news is that Korea's moving industry is famously service-heavy. A full package mover (포장이사) will pack, haul, and unpack your entire home in a day. The trickier part is everything around the truck: the moving-in report at your new neighborhood office, transferring internet and utilities instead of cancelling them, and arranging transfer installation for anything you rent. This checklist walks through each step in order.

Package, half-package, or a truck: choosing your moving service

Korean movers come in three broad service levels, and the right one depends on how much you own and how much you want to do yourself.

• Full package (포장이사): the movers pack everything, load, transport, unpack at the new home, and take the packing materials away. You mostly point and supervise. It's the default for families and full apartments.
• Half package (반포장이사): you box up small personal items yourself; the movers handle furniture, appliances, and the heavy lifting. Usually a cheaper middle ground for one- or two-room homes.
• Truck only (용달): a truck and driver for a small load you've packed yourself. Practical for a lightly furnished one-room or officetel.

Get two or three quotes (many companies estimate by video call now), and book early if your date falls at the end of a month, on a weekend, or on a 손 없는 날. Traditionally auspicious moving days when demand and quotes both climb. If your building is high up, ask whether a ladder truck (사다리차) is needed and included in the quote.

Before moving day: decluttering and disposal, the Korean way

A move is the natural moment to shed furniture and appliances you no longer want. But in Korea you can't just leave them by the curb.

• Large items you own: beds, sofas, desks, and big appliances need a paid disposal sticker (대형폐기물 스티커) from your district office or its website before pickup. Fees vary by item and district, so check your local rate table a week or two ahead. Our trash and recycling guide covers the process.
• Rented items: never put a disposal sticker on something you rent. Contact the rental company instead: they either collect it or move it with you (more on that below).
• Everything else: use up your jongnyangje (종량제) bags for a final clear-out, and give away usable items through neighborhood secondhand apps.

Also tell your building office your moving date. Many apartment complexes ask you to reserve the elevator, and some collect a move-out settlement for shared fees.

After you arrive: the moving-in report (전입신고) and address updates

Once you've moved in, Korea expects your address on paper to catch up quickly.

• Moving-in report (전입신고). File it at the community center (주민센터) of your new neighborhood soon after moving in. There is a short legal deadline. Roughly two weeks, though the exact rule depends on your registration status, so confirm at the counter. Bring your residence card and lease; the online route (Government24) is mostly in Korean, so many foreign residents find the counter visit easier.
• Residence card address: foreign residents also need their new address reflected on their card; in many cases the community center handles this together with the moving-in report, but requirements and deadlines can change, so confirm the current procedure at the counter or with your local immigration office.
• Everyone who mails you things: update your address with your bank, phone carrier, employer or school, delivery apps, and any subscriptions.

None of this is difficult, but the reporting window passes quickly amid unpacking. Do it in the first week.

Internet and utilities: transfer, don't cancel

Mid-contract cancellation is rarely the right move. Most services in Korea are built to move with you.

• Home internet. Providers offer transfer installation (이전설치) to your new address. Call ahead of moving day to book a technician slot, and check that your provider serves the new building (some buildings are wired for only certain carriers). • City gas: needs a technician visit at both ends: one to take a final reading and disconnect the range at the old home, one to reconnect at the new one. Book both a few days ahead.
• Electricity and water: settle the final meter readings for your move-out date; in most apartment buildings the management office helps with this as part of the move-out settlement.

Rented appliances and furniture: they move with you

If you rent a water purifier, air conditioner, washing machine, mattress, or other appliances, those belong to the rental company. So they're handled outside the normal moving process. Contact the manufacturer or rental company before moving day to arrange transfer installation (이전설치): a technician uninstalls the product at your old home and reinstalls it at the new one, which matters for anything plumbed or mounted, like water purifiers, bidets, and air conditioners. Whether a transfer fee applies, and how far ahead you need to book, varies by company and product. Confirm the details with your provider or during a consultation.
