Cancelling a Rental in Korea: Early Termination, Fees and Smarter Exits

Plans change — you are moving, leaving Korea, or the product no longer fits your life. The good news: cancelling a rental in Korea is a normal, well-trodden process, not a trap. The key is knowing what actually determines the cost, and which alternatives are often cheaper than breaking the contract outright. This guide walks through both, plus the exact steps to cancel when that really is the right move. One honest note up front: every rental company calculates termination differently, so treat this as the map, and confirm the exact numbers for your contract before deciding.

What actually happens when you cancel early

A Korean rental (렌탈) contract is a commitment for a fixed period — usually 12 to 60 months. When you end it early, the rental company settles the remaining commitment: you return the product (or buy out the remainder, if offered) and pay a settlement based on what is left of the contract.

There is no single nationwide formula. Each company writes its own terms, and they differ by product, contract length and promotion. That is why any exact number you read online — including here — should only ever be treated as an illustration. The real figure comes from your contract and the company's customer centre, and it is worth getting that figure before you decide, because sometimes the smarter exit is one of the alternatives below.

The four things that decide what you pay

When a rental company quotes your termination settlement, it is usually built from some mix of these:

• Remaining months — the further you are from the end date, the larger the settlement basis.
• Mandatory-use period (의무사용기간) — many contracts have a minimum period during which cancelling costs the most. After it passes, terms often soften.
• Waived fees coming back — registration or installation fees that were waived at sign-up, and promotional discounts, can be charged back when you leave early.
• Collection cost (철거비) — a crew has to come and remove the unit; some companies bill this separately.

Ask the customer centre to break your quote down into these parts. It makes the number understandable — and occasionally negotiable, for example when the product had repeated defects.

How to cancel, step by step

Your rental contract is with the manufacturer or rental company directly — so cancellation is processed by them, not by the platform where you applied. The process:

• 1. Find your contract details — the company name, contract or customer number, and the installation address. These are on your contract copy or billing messages.
• 2. Call or message the company's customer centre — say you want 중도해지 (early termination). Ask for the full settlement amount in writing, broken down.
• 3. Compare the alternatives — relocation, transfer or riding out the remaining months (all below) before you confirm.
• 4. Book the collection (철거) — pick a date when you can be home; hand over the unit and keep any confirmation you receive.
• 5. Check the final bill — the last invoice should match the written quote.

Moving within Korea? You usually don't need to cancel

The most common cancellation mistake: terminating a contract because of a move, when the company would happily relocate the unit (이전설치) to your new address — typically for a service fee that is far smaller than a termination settlement.

Water purifiers, air conditioners, washing machines and bidets are moved this way every day in Korea. Call the company with your moving date and both addresses, and book the relocation a week or more ahead if you can.

Leaving Korea for good

If you are leaving the country, you have three exits — in rough order of cost:

• Transfer the contract (명의변경) — many companies allow you to hand the contract to another person in Korea (a friend, colleague or the next tenant). Conditions and small fees vary, but when it is allowed this is often the cheapest exit by far.
• Terminate and settle — the standard route above. Start early: collection slots fill up, and you want the unit picked up before you hand back the apartment.
• Let the contract run out — if only a few months remain, compare the cost of simply paying them out against the settlement. Sometimes finishing the contract is cheaper.

• Match the contract to your realistic stay. Longer contracts have lower monthly fees but bigger exit costs. If your visa horizon is two years, think hard before signing five.
